How to create a SMS QR Code

  1. Include the country code.
  2. Write a short message.
  3. Download and test on both iOS and Android.

How an SMS QR code works

The code contains your phone number and an optional message. Scanning it opens the messaging app with both filled in, ready to send. Include the country code (for example +1 or +961) so it works from anywhere.

Where SMS codes work well

Common uses are "text us to book", quick polls, support requests and keywords on posters. A short, clear message such as "JOIN" or "Hi, I'd like to book a table" tells you why the person wrote.

Things to check

Some phones ignore a prefilled message or handle it differently, so test on iPhone and Android. If you collect numbers for marketing, follow the consent rules that apply where you operate and tell people what they will receive. Keep the message short, because long text makes a denser code. For a chat that works across phones and countries, consider a WhatsApp QR code.

Say what will happen

Put the instruction in words next to the code, not only the code itself, so people who cannot scan can still text. For example: "Text MENU to +1 555 0100 for today's specials." If people text a keyword, reply promptly so they know it worked. Check that your number can receive texts from other countries if your audience travels, and that your messaging plan allows the volume you expect.
