When a text QR code is the right choice

A text code shows plain text when scanned: serial numbers, short notes, instructions, a coupon code or a clue in a puzzle. There is no link and nothing to tap; the scanning app simply displays what you typed.

Keep it short

A QR code can hold roughly 2,900 characters at most, but every extra character makes the pattern denser and harder to scan. Aim for a few lines. For anything longer, put the text on a web page and use a URL QR code.

Text is not a link

Phones show the text and may offer to search for it or copy it, but they do not treat it as a web address. If you want people to open a page, use the URL type. Error correction M suits most text codes; raise it only if the code will be exposed to wear. See error correction explained.

Examples that work, and one to avoid

Good uses include a hint on a locker, a serial number on equipment for service staff, a short notice in several languages or a discount code to read out at the till. Avoid anything sensitive: the text is visible to anyone who scans and a printed code cannot be revoked. If the person needs to act on the content, such as open a page or call a number, use the matching QR type instead of plain text.

Frequently asked questions

How much text fits?

Up to roughly 2,900 characters, but shorter text scans much more reliably.
